Science - What i learned

This trimester in the owl pellet unit I learned a lot about the digestive track of owls and other things. First after they eat and the pellet is being made the pellet blocks their throat so they can't eat anything else until that pellet is expelled. Also in one pellet an owl can have anywhere from one to four other animals.
In addition to that owls also have a variety of different things they eat in their diet, from bugs to other birds! What's amazing is that they eat their prey whole and some of the things they eat are huge! I could never be an owl though because I could never eat just once a day.

Science current event

The article I read was about how president Obama approved 13 new researchers to do stem cell research. Stem cell research is when cells from a fertilized embryo is put next to living cells to form that cell. The theory is that the cells from the embryo are like "blank cells" and will configure themselves to match the surrounding cells. The government will not fund it and nothing the government is funding is not allowed in the lab they are testing it in. They even had to repaint the walls to "ensure no contamination from federal funding".
Many people are against stem cell research but i am not. I don't see what's wrong with it personally. They are taking an UNBORN, not living, baby and using it to cure people with serious diseases. Since the embryo can not feel this I find nothing wrong with it.

science current event

The article I read is about how pigs can use mirrors (article name, Who's that sexy swine http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2009/1106/2). A team of animal welfare scientists at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom placed eight domesticated pigs, two at a time, in a pen with a mirror for 5 hours. Since pigs are social, they prefer having a another pig in a pen; plus they could also observe others actions and movements in the mirror. At first, the pigs studied their reflected images and movements; some grunted at their image, and one banged the mirror so hard with its nose, it broke the glass. "They initially interpret the image as another pig," says lead author and animal welfare scientist Donald Broom. That's a classic error that most species never get beyond.
The scientists say this could help the welfare of pigs but I disagree. I do not think knowing how to look at yourself is of any relevance to your general welfare. Honestly i thin just the fact that they're seeing which animals can successfully use mirrors is not very smart. I can imagine someone majoring in mirror usage for animals. I personally think scientists need to find a better way to spend their time.

literature bullying

I can connect it to Slake's Limbo because everyone agrees that homelessness, like bullying, is not good but it can't be helped.

literature summer reading

I read Forbidden City and I can connect this book to the American Civil War. I can connect this to the American civil war because like when China went under marshal law there were people from their own country killing their own people.

welcome scientists

My favorite subject is science because it's fun and not very hard.
The best book i ever read was White Fang
My favorite food to buy in the cafeteria is pizza.
On the weekend when all my chores are done i like watching Scrubs on TV.
If I won a free airline ticket to any place I wanted, I would go to Hawaii because i've never been there and it sounds like fun.
If i had a pet, it would be a chinchilla and i would name it Winston.
This year, if i work hard enough, i hope to get straight A's.
